What Can You Do to Help Reduce Synthetic Microfiber Shed?

What Can You Do to Help Reduce Synthetic Microfiber Shed?

Leonard Hennessy |

When you wash your clothes, they shed microfibers.

Boom. Fact. Can’t avoid it.

The problem?

Wastewater from your laundry carries those microfibers out into the wild. Now after (how many years since we started washing wrinkle-free clothes?), synthetic microfibers are all throughout the environment and even in the food chain, resulting in microplastics in humans, too. It’s part of global microplastic pollution.

My philosophy at 90Threads is to offer apparel that is made from about 90% or more organic or ethically sourced fibers. In this way, microfibers from your apparel will biodegrade, and with ethically sourced fabric, you’re assured that processing during the garment’s manufacture doesn’t introduce chemicals into the environment or expose the garment makers to chemical risk when the clothing is manufactured.

That’s why I started 90Threads: to empower YOU to help reduce the problem of synthetic microfiber pollution.

In addition, there’s a few things you can do starting today.

1. Avoid high-shed clothing made from polyester, nylon, and acrylic.

2. Wash your clothes in cold water: hot water weakens synthetic fibers and encourages shed.

3. Use a laundry filter for microfibers to catch the fibers in the laundry wastewater.

4. Use shorter, gentler wash cycles (if possible).  Less agitation means less microfiber shed.

5. Wash full loads: this will reduce the amount of friction between clothes during the cycle, resulting in less microfibers being released.

90Threads is an apparel store on a mission: to bring you organic and ethically sourced apparel to help keep synthetic microfibers out of the waterways and food chain. Synthetic fibers cause health issues. But doing those things can help.

Merino Wool is my favorite fabric. It keeps your skin dry and ventilated when it's warm and insulated when it's cool. It’s versatile and most of what I offer at 90Threads has been certified by the Woolmark Corporation and even meets OEKO TEX standards.

But microplastics pollution is a big enough problem that I’m completely happy saying: even if you don't buy from 90Threads, at least buy ethically sourced apparel.
